Natural Reflections: Up close and personal

by Joe Aker, Aker Imaging Gallery

A love and passion for nature best describes the images of Alexandra Nemeth or Lexi as she is affectionately known. Born and raised in Hungary, she has worked with many nature conservancy groups to conserve and protect our natural heritage for generations to come. Her greatest adventures as a young girl were visiting her Grandma in a small village near the Danube River where she first learned to love and appreciate the simplicity and beauty of nature. This connection with nature has become a lifelong obsession with Lexi. After settling with her family in Houston in 1990, she started to explore photography and participate in many photographic organizations and competitions. While nature photography is her passion, she works during the week as a Mohs Histology technician at Dermatology Surgery Associates.   Her husband, Dr. Laszlo Perlaky, faculty at Baylor College of Medicine and Scientific director of Research and Tissue Support Services at Texas Children’s Cancer Center, is also a highly accomplished photographer and worker in nature photography. Together they form a partnership to capture the beauty of this world. Nothing stands in their way to find and capture that special image.

Like all great nature photographers, Lexi’s photography transcends the mere recording of what is first seen. The photography in this exhibit explores the world of macro photography. A drop of water captured at first light, dew on a leaf of a flower and drops of water on a leaf reflecting the sun are all images in the exhibit. Rarely noticed but always there, it takes patience and exploration to find and capture the beauty of the natural macro world. It is that world that most never notice in the hectic technological jungle of life today. It is far easier to send an email, text or watch mindless television that it is to stop and look closely at what is just outside our own doors and parks.   What Lexi has created are images that bring this world to the unsuspecting viewer in a bright and vivid and/or surprisingly subtle color.   As one looks at the images they stop and ponder what they have missed in the hurry up world they live in.   And for a moment wish that they would have looked more closely at the leaves and flowers as they left home on that cool fall morning.

Her work is in the permanent collections of the Methodist Hospital Outpatient Center, Saint Luke’s Episcopal Hospital, Baylor College of Medicine, University of Houston Clear Lake and Pearland as well as many Private Collections.

Artist Statement

by Lexi Nemeth

“Natural Reflections: Up Close and Personal” is my vision and realization of my observations of the colors and shapes in the dew, the leaves and plants, as together they tell the hidden messages from our natural world. The series of close-up photographs, reflections, forms, shapes, colors, create a dreamy, magical series of visions of the beauty that most of us never notice.

Photography is painting with light, but for me that is much more. I look for those situations in our natural environment, when the light causes very special effects, and allow me to see all possibilities in which I can show light differently. I like to be out on the fields at early mornings, when dew covers the plants, dewdrops form tiny lenses and colorful reflections show their warm colors. If we look through these nature’s dewdrops lenses from a special angle, we can see the whole world upside down in them. What a magical world! Similarly, I like to photograph in pouring rain or after rain, when raindrops cover all of the vegetation. I feel and hear the Nature’s sound, and I try to capture these intimate moments with my camera. Each photograph captures rare, hard to see moments, and translates them into a communication form.

  • The photograph on the invite and on the Banner at the Aker Gallery is one of Lexi’s favorite. We got a storm on the backroads of the Uncompahgre Wilderness. We sheltered there about an hour then the rain stopped and the sky started to clear up, Sun came out. I focused with my large format camera to the line of spiky peaks with clearing storm clouds, but Lexi saw the raindrops covered grassy meadow differently, laid down and photographed the whole World around her upside down in a raindrop on the grass. Less then an hour the whole area dried up and the magic disappeared. (Laszlo Perlaky, Naturalperl Images)

We got six times rain during Saturday and Sunday and warm high humidity in between… Sunday 11 AM storm dropped heavy rain about an hour and almost everybody got trouble in the art tents with dripping, splashing, soaking water. Unfortunately the weather affected the visitors’ buying activity too. However, we all smiled and almost all visitors liked my large format film camera based black and white photographs exhibited in my booth and they all expressed their encouraging appreciation.
