Laszlo’s New Year Day Thoughts

2016 passed, and this happened really fast, even the New Year knocked on the door when we were on our winter Photography trip. We arrived safely to the historic Hotel El Capitan in Van Horn, TX at late afternoon on the last day of the Old Year. That was a good timing, because after a delicious dinner there, I relaxed and started to think about our unfinished projects and started to set up our new goals for the New Year. Frankly, 2016 was a very good year! First of all, I am almost 64 years old and I was never in the hospital as a patient in my life, never had any surgery or broken bone, and I feel myself strong and healthy. Well, I have some minor aging related blood pressure issues, but I am in my good physician friends’ hands, so I am fine. My lovely wife Lexi and our two kids Daniel and Gergo are healthy too, so I just have to say thank you for all of these blessings.

As you all know, we have a very busy dual life. During the workdays Lexi is a fantastic Mohs surgery histology technician who makes the most beautiful diagnostic slides during surgery. I am a Baylor College of Medicine faculty and I just received the 25 years’ Service Recognition Award in 2016. I work as a Scientific Director of the Research and Tissue Support Services Core. Together with my Faculty Director, Core Laboratory Manager, Supervisor and our Staff, we work closely with the Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Center’s research scientists and support several research projects, and I teach my Baylor College of Medicine medical students in 5 terms during the year. However, on the weekends and after work, my wife and I are photographic artists and we fulfill both of our professions at the highest level.

I have my Naturalperl Fine Art Photography small business and I try my best in every year to make it profitable. I am a well-known photography instructor, I thought 14 workshops at the Houston Center for Photography, led 4 discussion/critique meetings at the Houston Photography Study Group, and as a Volunteer Emeritus, I donated 7 Photo-walks to Brazos Bend State Park in last year. Brazos Bend State Park Volunteer Organization recognized my volunteer work with the 25 years’ service award in 2016 October. I led almost 100 Photo-walks there during my 25 years, and from 2017, I will continue my photography program as “Through the Lens” advanced workshops. Finally, I published five books in 2016. My color portfolios: “Softies to imaginations”, Lexi’s color portfolios: “Images from my Heart”, Lexi’s and My exhibition portfolios: “Two in the Bush” and “Early Light Drops”, and a special collaboration book with my good friend: “Literary and Visual Metaphors”. We actively participated with our photographic arts, in the contests and exhibitions of different photographic organizations like Houston Photographic Society (HPS), New England Large Format Photography Collective (NELFPC), Pixel Silver Group, Visual Arts Alliance (VAA), JoMar Visions, Amanda Smith Gallery, just name a few. Last year we submitted our works for jurying to 22 Gallery exhibition contests and we were accepted for 11 Group exhibitions, which is a very good success. My large format black and white photography application and Lexi’s color photography application for the Art for Rural Texas (ARTS) were accepted and we had a very nice exhibition during the Art Walk at the Square of historic Fayetteville. My large format film based black and white photograph “Door to the Dark Water” were selected as a winner in the Black and White Magazine’s Single image world contest, and were published there.  My color images won several prizes at the NVAL 2016 International Juried Photography Show, at the Jardin Botanique de Bordeaux, France contest and at the 9th International Color Awards. During our Summer trip, we photographed in the beautiful Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness (Montana), in Yellowstone National Park (Montana/Wyoming) and Grand Teton National Park (Wyoming). We got few challenges by the daily heavy rain, snow, hail, wind, high elevation, but we were there, our base camp and all of our outings were safe, and we photographed every day. During our recent winter photography trip to Davis Mountains, Big Bend National Park, Santa Fe, Bosque del Apache and White Sand, before Christmas and between Christmas and New Year, we got freezing cold, but no extreme challenges. After photographing in Big Bend National Park, we returned to Austin, and celebrated Christmas with our kids, Daniel and Gergo, Gergo’s wife Emily, and her parents. We had a heartwarming, nice get together, great food, thoughtful presents and unforgettable memories with lot of hugs and more hugs.  We drove to Santa Fe on Christmas Day in a challenging 40 mph side wind.  We were tired after the 700 miles long, drive, but we made it safely, and at evening at the light of our Christmas candle, we remembered to the quality time with our kids and remembered to the other loved ones who live only in our memories. We spent a great time in Santa Fe, visited art galleries and then photographed in Bernardo Wildlife Area, Bosque del Apache NWR and in White Sands National Monument… and now I recall all of these on the last day of 2016 in our comfortable historic Hotel room. Can I ask for a better ending of the Old Year?

Well, many things remained on my 2016 things to do list, but I already re-evaluated and transferred few to the 2017 things to do list, which is getting longer every day. I really hope we will able to make most of our plans, because we really would like to complete those. Psst… more about those on the last day of 2017!

Wishing you a happy, successful New Year! Laszlo and Lexi
