January 24, 2021 “All About Lenses” Sign up today to learn everything you need to know about lenses for your camera! Students will learn the basic physics of light, reflections, mirrors, simple and complex lenses and understand the eyeglasses, telescopes, and camera lenses. Your instructor, Laszlo Perlaky, will demonstrate the sensor size and camera lens relationship. Additionally, the class will demystify wide-angle, standard, and telephoto lenses, zoom lenses, tele-extenders, close-up diopters, pointing to the lens effects, optical isolation, and bokeh. Students will discover solutions for all their photographic lens-related challenges in this short 3-hour class!

February 28, 2021 “Light Meters and The Lies They Tell You” Light meters can be a friend or foe to a photographer. This course will help you handle exposure values, accurately calculate meter readings, apply the zone system in black and white and color, and understand histograms. You’ll also learn different metering options—from handheld to built-in. Instructor Laszlo Perlaky will show students different types of light meters and reveal how they meter on different reflective objects. Students will learn about Spot metering, evaluative metering, and selective metering to calculate the correct exposure. Don’t let those meters lie to you. March 7 and March 21, 2021 “Close-Up, Macro Photography: Art Techniques and Beyond” Back by popular demand! In this compact yet thoughtful workshop, we discuss the art of getting close. This class will introduce you to techniques, tools, and lenses used for extreme close-up photography. Learn to determine magnification and working—your camera’s standard lens—instead of expensive professional lenses.

Part 1: is an introductory class for artistic-minded photographers. After a brief introduction about the different close-up and macro photography techniques, your Instructor, Laszlo Perlaky, will demonstrate how to take close-ups using a DSLR camera or with any point and shoot camera or cell phone. You will see Perlaky’s demo setups and look at selections of fine art close-up images as examples taken with unusual, inexpensive lenses. Students will be given practical instructions and preparations for their close-up photography homework assignment.

Part 2: Students will present their assignment images. Perlaky will lead a critique and group discussion in a friendly environment and give students tools for overcoming challenges in their work and future growth.

April 25 and May 16, 2021 “Bird Photography: Art, Techniques and Beyond” Bird photography can feel overwhelming at first—from figuring out what equipment to use, how to get close to birds responsibly, and understanding your camera settings. Join nature photographer Laszlo Perlaky to learn about the past and current works of nature and landscape photographers and prepare to capture your compelling images of birds in flight! Time to answer nature’s call—get inspired and equipped to start photographing birds in their natural habitat in this short class!

Part 1: is an introductory class for the art and technique of Bird Photography. Your instructor will briefly describe the history of bird photography and reveal how advancements have influenced bird photography in technology. Students will be introduced to different telephoto techniques and equipment, including innovative camera supports, beanbags, and tripods with special heads. Students will be provided with a detailed explanation and practical instruction for their bird photography homework assignment photographing nesting birds on their own at the Houston Audubon High Island Rookery.
